We are incredibly proud of our amazing 2nd grade students who recently presented their scientific prototype at the Board of Education meeting! Our young scholars confidently showcased their creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving skills as they explained the purpose and process behind their experiment.
This exciting learning experience was led by our outstanding Math Coach, Ms. Lucy, whose dedication and innovative instruction helped guide students through the scientific design process. Through collaboration, exploration, and hands on learning, our students demonstrated that curiosity and discovery have no age limit!
Watching our 2nd graders present with confidence and enthusiasm was truly inspiring. They represented our school with excellence and proved that the future of STEM is bright!
Join us in celebrating our young innovators!

On Sept 16, 2025, Mitchell County Primary School was overflowing with love as the school celebrated Grandparents Day. The joy was undeniable as grandparents enjoyed doughnuts, sat side by side with their grandchild to complete an interview survey, and filled the building with smiles, laughter, and cherished memories.
The program opened beautifully with three second grade students who gave the welcome, poem, and purpose, reminding us of the special place grandparents hold in our hearts.
Mrs. Detrell Hawkins of Kate’s Club, a grief support organization that provides care and comfort to children and families navigating the loss of a loved one gave a short talk for the crowd. Her words offered encouragement and hope to all who attended.
It was truly a joy to see so many grandparents come together, surrounding their students with love and support. The day was a beautiful reminder that grandparents are not only part of our families but also a vital part of our school community

At MCPS, Our Students Will SOAR!

To SOAR means: Staying Safe, Owning Our Actions, Acting Kindly, and being Ready to Learn.
Today, our students participated in a special Meet & Greet session with Principal Erica Jones and Assistant Principal Laticia Silas. During this time, students learned about our school, classroom, and behavioral expectations, setting the stage for a successful and positive year.
The admin team and students engaged in meaningful conversations about what it looks like to SOAR together at MCPS. They explored our PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) system, including exciting celebrations, the use of SOAR Bucks, examples of positive and negative behaviors, and how good choices will be recognized and rewarded throughout the year.
Students also discussed what it takes to maintain a safe and positive learning environment for everyone, from showing respect and kindness to taking responsibility for their actions. By working together, we can ensure MCPS remains a place where every student feels valued, supported, and ready to learn.
With clear expectations, positive encouragement, and a shared commitment to excellence, we know this will be a year where our students truly SOAR to success!

In a heartwarming and educational tribute to Black History Month, our outstanding 1st-grade students participated in a Living Wax Museum. This inspiring event was the culmination of weeks of research, creativity, and dedication as these young scholars explored the lives and legacies of famous African American figures. Each student selected a renowned Black athlete, musician, author, inventor, actor, or activist/civil rights leader to study. With enthusiasm, they delved into their person’s history, contributions, and impact on society. During the Living Wax Museum, the 1st graders transformed into their historical figures, bringing history to life with impressive displays, well-rehearsed speeches, and detailed costumes. Parents, teachers, and fellow students had the opportunity to walk through the museum, engaging with each young scholar as they shared fascinating facts and stories about the person they represented. The event was not only a celebration of Black excellence but also a powerful learning experience. It encouraged the students to develop research skills, build confidence in public speaking, and foster a deeper appreciation for the contributions of African Americans throughout history. Hats off to our amazing 1st-grade scholars for their hard work and dedication! Special thanks to their parents and teachers for their support in making this event a success. The Living Wax Museum was a testament to the bright future of our young learners and the importance of honoring those who have paved the way for progress and change.
Rebecca (Becky) Bentley is a 1994 graduate of Pelham High School and a 2009 graduate of Albany State University where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education. She has been teaching in the Mitchell County School System since January 2011. She has been the Health and Physical Education teacher at Mitchell County Primary School for the past 13.5 years where she has touched the lives of many students and has become affectionately known as Ms. Coach Bentley. She has also coached softball, volleyball, girls’ basketball, and tennis throughout the years. She incorporates activities into her daily lessons to reinforce classroom subject matters such as Sight Word Showdowns and Math Fact Fun. Though Coach Bentley believes academics are the primary basis for success, she also wants her students to know they can excel in other areas such as physical education and sports. Students not only learn how to win in her classes, but they also learn how to lose—a lesson that goes way beyond primary school ages. She goes above and beyond to reach her students and to make sure they feel important by greeting them by name and with a smile. When students leave the Primary School, Coach Bentley’s goal is for them to move to the next
level with confidence.
