Attendance

Regular school attendance is essential to a child’s growth, learning, and development. A child’s
education is negatively impacted when the number of days he/she is absent and/or tardy becomes
excessive. To prevent issues with your child’s attendance as the school year continues, please ensure
that an excuse is provided to the school each time your child is absent and/or tardy.

Per the Mitchell County School System Student Handbook, four (4) handwritten excuses from parents
are permitted per semester (August - December & January - May). All other excuses must come from a
doctor or otherwise be approved by school administrators. When your child accumulates 5 or more
absences and excuses have not been provided to the school, your presence may be requested to attend
a meeting where a school-level attendance contract will be established and enforced by school
staff/officials.
